Fiction, Facts & Folklore:

Morganite is the pink variety of the beryl mineral group.

Morganite is sometimes known in the industry as vorobevite.

Gem experts still considered morganite to be in its infancy.

It was first discovered during the early part of the 20th century by miners searching for tourmaline in southern California.

These initial finds were at first thought to be pink tourmaline, because this variety was often associated with this particular area of the country.

Laboratory tests identified manganese as its principle coloring agent.

Morganite also contains traces of cesium and lithium, two rare elements of nature.

These finds in California have proven to be sporadic at best.

The finest morganites today come from Madagascar and Brazil.

In Madagascar, morganite is sometimes found in combination with its sister stone the aquamarine. These rare bicolor

beryls are seldom, if ever seen at retail.

Morganite has a higher specific gravity than the aquamarine and the emerald.

The stone was named after J. Pierpont Morgan, a wealthy gem fancier.

Like the aquamarine, morganite too is dichroic, showing pink hues when viewed from one viewing angle, and almost colorless properties from another.
